Crockpot Chicken & Dumplings

Fall is in full swing around here!  Today is cold, rainy, and super WINDY!  We're supposed to see wind speeds over 50 MPH.  That's a little nuts, isn't it?

What better thing to do on a day like this than make some nice, warm comfort food.  And since this meal cooks in the crockpot, that means your oven is free to bake some bread or goodies.  Doesn't that sound nice?  It sure does to me!

This recipe is adapted from HERE and we absolutely LOVED it!  I loved the shortcut of using canned biscuit dough for the dumplings.  It was so simple and so delicious!  Brilliant really.

Here's what you'll need:

2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts (I doubled the recipe since we were cooking for extras and I only had three chicken breasts.  It worked out great though.)
2 Tbsp. butter
2  (10.5 oz.) cans cream of chicken soup
1 (14.5 oz) can chicken broth
1/2 onion, diced OR you can use 2 Tbsp. dried, diced onion
1 Tbsp. dried parsley
4 Grands flaky refrigerator biscuits

Place chicken in crockpot.  Plop the butter on the chicken.

Then scoop the cream of chicken soup on that (since I doubled this recipe, I only had 3 cans of cream of chicken soup, so I added a can of cream of mushroom soup).

Pour the chicken broth over all.

Add the diced onion and dried parsley.

Cover and cook on High for 4-5 hours or Low for 8-9 hours.
After the chicken is cooked, shred it and put it back into the soup.

Cut each biscuit into 9 pieces.
(Remember that I doubled mine, that's why there are more than 4.)

Stir gently into the soup.  Cover and turn the crockpot to High and cook for another hour.

After an hour, stir it up and this is what you'll get.

Serve warm and enjoy!

    1. hello, is it possible to just cut biscuits in half to make them thinner and place a layer on top of chicken mixture for a chicken and biscuit type dinner. im not very fond of dumplings but this does look amazing and yummy. thx

    2. You could probably use egg noodles. I make a similar dish with them.

  7. Do you think this would freeze well? I was thinking about freezing it into single portion sizes for my husband to heat up while I'm out of town...

  8. I make my dumplings from a scratch and its not freezable! But I am wondering if i could cook mine like this! Chicken and dumplings have been a family favorite all my life but working full time its hard for me to cook it because cooking from scratch takes a few hours so I wonder if this could work

  9. I only have chicken tenderloin. Would the cooking time be reduced? Thanks

  15. So, so happy to hear so many are enjoying this recipe! I have lots of questions to answer, so I'll do my best to answer them all...

I would guess this recipe serves 6.

I don't think these would freeze very well.

When cooking with a crockpot, the time doesn't vary too much whether you use breast or tenderloins. Maybe opt for the lesser cooking times, but it shouldn't make too much of a difference.

Since I had doubled my batch, I used my biggest crockpot. I think by using a bigger crockpot made it so I didn't have to adjust the time.

The cream of chicken soup cans are the 10.5 oz cans.

The recipe as listed is the single batch. Double everything if you're making a double batch.

I'm sure this recipe would work just fine using frozen chicken breasts. It's usually not recommended to use frozen meats in a crockpot, but I do all the time with success. You might want to increase the time, however. And it may be a little more watered down using frozen chicken.

Hope this all helps. Thank you all for the comments. I love them!!

  16. Suggestions on vegetables to add into the mix? My train of thinking is if veggies are included in the crockpot it could be a whole meal!

Would frozen green beans work well?

  17. Great thinking adding some veggies for a complete meal in one! I'm sure frozen green beans would work just fine. I would probably add some frozen peas and carrots since my kiddos would like that.

I added corn and carrots as well.
Slow cooker recipes can be iffy sometimes, but this one turned out exactly as expected (actually, much better than expected) and it was delicious!
10 out of 10 would make it again.

  42. Do you think it would work if you cooked on low for 2-2 1/2 hours after adding the biscuits instead of cooking on high for one hour? We like to eat as soon as we get home. 😀

  51. So now I feel dumb, but mine turned out NOTHING like this because where it says 4 Grand Flaky Biscuits, I assumed 4 CANS not 1 can and 4 biscuits out of it. I couldn't have been the only one who maybe thought this, I even thought to myself DAMN that's a lot of biscuits but okay.. could you maybe change and clarify it haha

  52. I am going to add a little sriracha sauce to the mix to spice it up a bit.

    ReplyDelete
  53. This was very good. The only problem I had was with the biscuits, they were still mushy in the middle. Next time I will use use jiffy mix instead, always have great luck with that. Give it a try.

  61. My New Years resolution is to cook up a new recipe every week to increase our menu options and eat out rarely. Your post is by far the best format I've had the pleasure to read. I'm a retired trainer/software training manual creator. If I ever get around to posting my own recipes I will do it exactly like this. I love the words/pictures in individual steps! Good job! This recipe is going to be this weeks new addition! Thank you! I'll be following you for other recipes!

  64. This is a wonderful recipe! Made it tonight. The only change I made was I used 1 can of cream of chicken soup and 1 can of cream of celery soup instead of 2 cans of cream of chicken. This is real southern style chicken and dumplings. I won't add any other vegetables. This is how its meant to be. I like the simplicity of this recipe. A real winner!

  65. I make this frequently it is great! For the last hour before I add the biscuits, I dice baby carrots and celery and add those. Then I toss in the biscuit pieces. I also add way more in the form of spices.
